Paul Hendry - Sports Performance Coach
Paul is currently in his 14th year of coaching track and field at Stevens High School (11th as head coach). With the help of some great assistant coaches, a great run of hardworking and talented student-athletes and lots of support from parents and the community, Paul has been fortunate to lead the Raider Track & Field team to 14 State Championships (Girls - 9 and Boys - 5). During that time the Raiders have won 42 individual events and 25 relay events at the South Dakota State Meet (including 3 State Records, 23 School Records and 9 All-Americans).
Paul was named the South Dakota High School Girls Track & Field Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2010 and in 2005 he was awarded the Stevens High School Teacher of Distinction Award and Rapid City Public School Foundation Golden Apple Award. He has been the Greater Dakota Conference Track & Field Coach of The Year and Area 9 Head Track & Field Coach of The Year 6 times each and the 2008 South Dakota Sportswriters Girls Prep Coach of The Year. He was just recently named as a National High School Coaches Association National Coach of the Year Finalists for girls track & field as well.
He is a 1987 graduate of Stevens High School where he was a 3-time State Champion triple jumper, multiple varsity letter-winner in football and basketball and the Rapid City Male High School Athlete of the Year in 1987.
A 1992 graduate of the University of South Dakota, he played football for the Coyotes for two years and competed in the long jump and triple jump where he was an NCAA Division II All-American triple jumper in 1989.
Paul has his B.S. in Physical Education / Coaching and is a certified track & field coach with USA Track & Field and a Sports Performance Coach with USA Weightlifting.
He is in his 11th year of teaching at Stevens High School where he teaches physical education (Weight Training) after 9 years of teaching physical education at North Middle School. Paul is married to a fabulous lady, Emily. They have one daughter - Mya who is 10 years old and in the sixth grade and two sons; DeAndre who is 5 years old and in Kindergarten and the newest addition Tyree who was born on October 9, 2009.
